Rollor Packaging

Designing protective e-commerce packaging solutions that are 100% plastic-free, recyclable and provide a unique unpacking experience.

As online shopping has surged in recent years, the home unpacking experience has become a crucial aspect of brand representation, often surpassing in-store interactions. To elevate this experience for high fashion garments, Rollor Packaging has introduced 'Rollor Premium'—a rollable e-commerce packaging solution designed to keep luxury garments wrinkle-free from the warehouse to the customer's doorstep.
In my role as product designer, I redesigned the patented rolling technique by developing a new rail system, which streamlined and sped up the folding process, reducing Rollor Premium's packing time by 50%. This innovation opened the door to new creative packaging solutions and tasked me with designing two new lines: Rollor Light, for shipping fashion items and accessories and Rollor Protect, for securely shipping fragile items like bottles. Both packaging lines are currently on the market and used by brands such as Pink by Victoria's Secret, Loewe, GAP, Banana Republic and Moët & Chandon.

The Starting Point: Rollor Premium
The Rollor Premium was Rollor Packaging's inaugural e-commerce solution, crafted to ship delicate fashion items crease-free using a patented rolling technique. Garments are positioned between two rails before the entire package is rolled into its distinctive hexagonal shape.

Developing the Rollor Light
From Rollor Premium to Rollor Light: Lightweight, Minimal Material and Easier Set Up
The Rollor Light aimed to replicate the Rollor Premium’s key features—hexagonal shape, rollability, and exceptional unpacking experience—while simplifying setup and reducing material use. To achieve this, I explored various foldable products within and beyond the packaging industry, developing numerous prototypes to refine the concept.
The result is a compact version of the Rollor Premium that utilizes a new rail system. While it does not focus on wrinkle-free delivery, it prioritizes being lightweight, using minimal material, and being plastic-free, all while offering a uniquely surprising unpacking experience. It is ideal for shipping garments, shoes, and accessories and comes in five different sizes.

Developing the Rollor Protect
From Rollor Light to Rollor Protect: Adjusting the Packaging to Ship Bottles
Many customers who had seen the Rollor products in action asked if they could also use Rollor packaging solutions to ship bottles. This posed a new challenge: adapting the existing products to securely fit and protect bottles during transit without relying on plastic bubble wrap.
I explored various design approaches and made many prototypes to find a solution that was user-friendly, securely held the bottle in place upon opening, and provided effective protection throughout its journey. The result is the Rollor Protect, which uses the rail system as a smart buffer to absorb impact and is ISTA 3A tested. Suitable for fragile items like glass, the Rollor Protect is available in four sizes. and has been awarded with the Gold Pentawards in 2022.
